On February 12, rector Mykola Frolov and academic representatives welcomed foreign guests at the Zaporizhzhia National University (ZNU, Zaporizhzhia National University). On this day, Christian Klauks, project manager of the University of Tartu; Susan Garton and Elisabeth Wilander, professors of Aston University; Stefani Witzig and Leone Ekzarkos, professors of Heidelberg University; Hans-Werner Huneke, rector of Heidelberg University, Alexandra Golovko, project coordinator of “Foreign Language Teacher Training Capacity Development as a Way to Ukraine’s Multilingual Education and European Integration” from the Estonian side, who also provided interpretation, met the representatives of Zaporizhzhia National University administration.

The purpose of their visit was to take part in the kick-off meeting of all foreign and Ukrainian partners of the project “Foreign Language Teacher Training Capacity Development as a Way to Ukraine’s Multilingual Education and European Integration” (MultiEd, registration number 610427-EE-2019-EPPKA2-CBHE-JP) in the framework of Erasmus + KA2 program of the “Development of Higher Education Potential”. Zaporizhzhia National University was represented not only by the rector Mykola Frolov but also by Yurii Kaganov, Vice-rector for scientific and pedagogical work; Halyna Moroshkina, Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Philology; Svitlana Zapolskykh, Head of the Department of Theory and Practice of Translation Studies; Alina Osaul, Head of International Office.

Rector Mykola Frolov said that ZNU is the largest higher educational institution in the south of Ukraine with almost 18 thousand students studying at 17 faculties, 4 colleges and about 1800 employees. He also mentioned that merger of ZNU and Zaporizhzhia State Engineering Academy (now - Engineering Institute of ZNU) is a significant landmark. As a result, it allowed students to obtain qualification not only in the field of humanities and natural sciences but also in engineering, which is very important for our industrial region.

Mykola Alexandrovych noted that ZNU will celebrate its 90th anniversary this year with a number of considerable achievements. ZNU steadfastly pursues the development of international relations, it cooperates with 36 higher-education institutions from different countries. The development of academic mobility for university staff and students, their project activities, the study of foreign languages by representatives of the faculties are supported and all the necessary conditions are created in the university.

Mykola Frolov highlighted the importance of further cooperation with higher-educational institutions represented by the guests. In response to the questions, asked by foreign HEI representatives’, he noted that ZNU gives high priority to teachers’ training program for secondary schools in 10 specialties. Moreover, he pointed out that reformation process for New Ukrainian School is in full swing in Ukraine, so the Ministry sought assistance with higher-education institutions for teachers’ in-service training. He also noted, that events on improvement of teachers’ professional skills are often organized in ZNU.

The guests thanked the representatives of Zaporizhzhia National University for their hospitality and fruitful cooperation. Then the kick-off meeting proceeded and the partners went on to the discussion of the major issues of the implementation the project “Foreign Language Teacher Training Capacity Development as a Way to Ukraine’s Multilingual Education and European Integration”.
