ZNU teachers study Content and Language Integrated Learning Methodology in the framework of the international project MultiEd
Zaporizhzhia National University continues to implement the international educational project MultiEd “Development of foreign language teacher training potential as a way to implement multilingual education and European integration of Ukraine” under the Erasmus + KA2 program.
Currently, within the framework of this project, 14 teachers of the Faculty of Foreign Philology and the Faculty of Journalism are undergoing advanced online training on the Moodle platform of the University of Tartu (Estonia) on the topic “Content and Language Integrated Learning for Tertiary Education (CLIL)”.
The essence of the CLIL methodology is a two-focused educational approach, in which a foreign language is used both as a tool and as a subject of study, which allows students to master a new subject while improving the competence of a foreign language.
The training course lasts from May until December 2020 and consists of three parts. The first phase was from May 18 to June 21 and presupposed individual work of trainees on the Moodle platform (listening to video lectures and presentations, analyzing specialized literature in English language). The second stage of the course was series of webinars, which took place on June 22-26 and finished with online testing. Final face-to-face phase is planned to be held in autumn 2020, when hopefully there will be releasing the quarantine measures due to Covid-19 pandemic
, and foreign trainers will be able to visit ZNU. By the way, the lecturers and managers of the course are British, Estonian and German colleagues Susan Garton and Elisabeth Wielander (Aston University, UK), Urve Aja and Oleksandra Golovko (University of Tartu, Estonia), and Jutta Rymarczyk and Stéfanie Witzigmann (Heidelberg University, Germany).
Within the first two phases of the advanced course the participants had the opportunity to master 5 thematic modules in such topics as “Introduction to CLIL”, “Practical applications of CLIL”, "Teaching collaboration in CLIL”, “Material design in CLIL”, and “Assessment in CLIL”. The online training in the format of webinars allowed participants to get acquainted with the real latest practice of implementing the CLIL methodology in different countries and learn the intricacies of its use. The online format also provided an opportunity to join a live discussion with experts, learn about peculiarities of implementing the CLIL methodology in different countries, and work in small groups. ZNU teachers will apply the mastered knowledge and acquired skills for developing new study modules and updating the existing courses in the framework of the project MultiEd of Erasmus+ KA program.
Thus, this advanced training will allow fourteen associate professors and professors of the Faculty of Foreign Philology and the Faculty of Journalism to improve their teaching skills and apply the CLIL methodology during classes in Zaporizhzhia National University. All this will contribute to the entry of ZNU into the modern integrated multilingual educational space of Europe and the rest of the world.
