The regional stage of All-Ukrainian competition for young researchers accounted for 950 participants

On February 24 Zaporizhzhya National University hosted the regional stage of All-Ukrainian competition for young researchers – members of the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The participants presented and defended their scientific research papers. High school students arrived from every part of Zaporizhzhya region to present their works at the second round of the competition. ZNU lecturers, who acted as judges at the competition, stressed that the amount of accomplished participants grew as well as the quality of their research papers.

One could even see the 8th grade students at the event though the participation is allowed only for the high school students. It turned out the youngsters wanted to see the presentation and defense process of the works before they would become the fully legitimate participants in the year to come. Last year Zaporizhzhya region took the 7th place in the All-Ukrainian final rating of the Academy participants. The representatives of our university express hope that this year the result will be better as more works have been accepted for participation in the second round. Overall, by February 24 the works of 950 high school students have been submitted to the Junior Academy of Sciences.

The University was happy to receive guests who judged the competition: the head of the Department of Science and Education, Youth and Sport Oleksandr Verozubov, deputy head of the Department of Education and Science at Regional Administration Victor Zaharchuk, resource teacher of Zaporizhzhya Regional Institute of Post-graduate Education Oksana Ustimenko and resource teacher of the Regional Centre of Tourism and Area study for Youth Olena Shelegeda.

 The high school students met the first prorector of ZNU Oleksandr Bondar, prorector for Science and Research Victor Gryshchak, head secretary of the Admissions board Stanislav Ivanenko, head of the Preparatory department Iryna Bakalenko, and also deans of the faculties, lecturers and researches of our institution.

The papers on technical sciences (Physics, Astronomy, Mathematics, Economics and Computer sciences) were presented in building 1 of the University. At the opening ceremony of the Regional round of the Junior Academy competition the prorector for Science and Research Victor Gryshchak greeted the participants (about 140 people) and their teachers on behalf of all University staff. He expressed hope that the events of the kind would help raise a new generation of Ukrainian scientists.  

The dean of the Faculty of Mathematics Sergiy Gomenyuk and the dean of the Faculty of Economics Alla Cherep also took a word. The head of the Preparatory department Iryna Bakalenko pointed out that in March the University will host free trainings on the System of Independent Evaluation. And the students who win in the competition at the all-Ukrainian level will get additional points at their entrance to any institution of high education.

In the building 2 there was a department of Philology and Art history. This year the number of the participants was impressive – about 380 students. The deputy head of the Department of Education and Science at Zaporizhzhya Regional Administration Victor Zaharchuk thanked teachers and parents for maintaining in students the love for science. He expressed hope that this year the participants of the Philological department show decent results at the all-Ukrainian level. The guests also received a word from the dean of the Faculty of Philology Tamara Homyak and the professors Petro Bilousenko, Iryna Pavlenko and Yuriy Zatsniy who have been contributing to the work of the Junior Academy of Sciences for many years.

The participants of the department of Chemistry, Biology, Ecology and Agricultural sciences were greeted by the first prorector of ZNU Oleksandr Bondar. They also heard the word of support from the resource teacher of Zaporizhzhya Regional Institute of Post-graduate Education Oksana Ustimenko. The dean of the Faculty of Biology Lyudmyla Omelyanchik and the vice-president of the Regional Department of the Junior Academy of Sciences, the head of the Physiology department Valentina Bovt told the students about the importance of scientific work in pursuing a successful career.

The dean of the Faculty of Biology Lyudmyla Omelyanchik noted that 236 students of grades 9-11 took part in the activities of the department. The most popular subjects were “Medicine and Valeology” and “Chemistry”. The knowledge level of the Junior Academy participants was rated high not only by the representatives of our University but also by those of Zaporizhzhya Medical University, Melitopol State Pedagogical University and Berdyansk State Pedagogical University along with some distinguished teachers of Ukraine. Ms Omelyanchik was happy to mention that this year’s works were done on a high scientific and methodological level. The judges liked that many works were based on the students’ own experiences and the topics were very timely.

The building 5 hosted several departments of the Junior Academy of Sciences: History, Philosophy, Social Sciences and Earth Sciences, and involved 185 high school students. During the solemn proceedings the introduction was delivered by the head of Department of Science and Education, Youth and Sport Oleksandr Verozubov, resource teacher of the Regional Centre of Tourism and Area study for Youth Olena Shelegeda, the dean of the Faculty of Law Tetyana Kolomoets and the dean of the Faculty of Sociology Maxim Lepskiy. Tetyana Kolomoets also highlighted the professional approach shown by the participants in their works. She admitted that it might have been the result of the issue-related seminars for the students’ academic advisors thathad been held on ZNU grounds. These seminars were dedicated to the methodology of the research paper writing, its format and design. Ms Kolomoets draw attention to the fact that the topics chosen by the students of all grades were complicated and up-to-date.

After distributing the top places among the winners of the regional part of the competition the judges granted letters of recognition for the works in 17 other categories. At the all-Ukrainian competition Zaporizhzhya region will be presented by a student of 10th grade of Gymnasium #6 Sofiya Kostomarova. She has chosen an important and rather complicated topic “The problem of checks and balances in the Constitutional Law”, having researched the situation in Ukraine and abroad.

The students and their teachers-academic advisors noticed a high organizational level of the competition. They expressed gratitude to the representatives of Zaporizhzhya National University for providing comfortable conditions for participation and for their support during the works presentation before the Junior Academy of Sciences.

 The Preparatory department head Iryna Bakalenko agreed that by hosting the event the University played its part in promoting sciences among youth on the regional level. The contest also was a good opportunity for the University to work with the best high school students of the region on their professional orientation. The latter received a lot of useful information on the events to come and found out more about studying in ZNU - the institution of high education of the highest (4th) level of accreditation.
