Representatives of the Scientific Library of ZNU attended the webinar "Electronic books and e-reader: challenges for Libraries"

August 20 was the first of a series of webinars on "E-book in the library," which started Ukrainian Library Association (UCA, http://ula.org.ua). 66 Universities and Regional Libraries - association members joined the distance studies event and chat in real time.

Subject of the first webinar - "E-books and e-reader: challenges for Libraries", held it doctor, vice president of ULA Valentina Pashkova (Kyiv). Known in the world of academic library began his speech quite unexpectedly: «In our library occurs a quiet revolution. More recently library were independent. They were free to choose, buy and recommend books, in fact all the books that were published. And then appeared E-books».
In the webinar touched upon the transformation of book, technological change, social issues, the term "e-book" as an electronic document and as the device. Valentina Pashkova offers e-book definition as a set of data (text, sound and moving image) in memory intended for human consumption with the appropriate software and hardware. The lecturer led sales of e-books in the world according to the network Amazon, which in 2012 surpassed sales of paper. 39% of U.S. libraries acquired and issue subscribe to e-readers. 90% of the budget of the university libraries of Great Britain used to "purchase" electronic content. In Ukraine it is illegal to use e-books possible only in the reading room.
Webinar participants suggested questions for discussion at the next webinars: rules, procedures and technological aspects of e-books from the library, the mechanism of acquisition of e-books, how to use e-reader.
