14.11.2005 22:15

Round table “Zaporizhzhya information space: language aspect” finished celebration of Day of Ukrainian language and written language at Zaporizhzhya National University. It was held on November 10 by instructors of ZNU faculty of journalism jointly with representatives of regional state administration.

Problem of language policy in mass media is an urgent one for our region. The following people took part in the discussion: head of internal policy and information board Olexandr Kovalenko, representative of National council in charge of television and radio broadcast at Zaporizhzhya region Volodymyr Kuchugurnyj, head of regional society “Prosvita”, docent of ZNU chair of Ukrainian language Taras Shevchenko, rector’s assistant in charge of public relations and mass-media, M. Sc. (Philology), docent of ZNU chair of journalistic creative work Iryna German, dean of ZNU faculty of journalism D. Sc. (Philology), professor Volodymyr Manakin and deputy dean M. Sc. (Pedagogy), docent, head of the chair of journalistic creative work Viktor Kostiuk.

Modern problems of information space language are the subject of many discussions. When will mass-media talk and write in Ukrainian?

According to statistics given by head of internal policy and information board Olexandr Kovalenko there are more than 500 periodicals registered, but only 200 of them really function. Major part of mass-media (151 issue) remain bi-lingual. dean of ZNU faculty of journalism D. Sc. (Philology), professor Volodymyr Manakin pointed out that, bi-lingual approach loosens language personality. Contrary position was presented by instructor of ZNU faculty of journalism, journalist of “Industrial Zaporizhzhya” Vitalina Moscovtseva-Doroshenko. According to researches of Canadian scientists those people who use two languages during a day are more intellectually developed and … live longer!

head of regional society “Prosvita”, docent of ZNU chair of Ukrainian language Taras Shevchenko paid attention that Ukrainians are minority among 100 nationalitis of Zaporizhzhya region. But some steps are made to support Ukrainian language and it was underlined by one of the participants - representative of National council in charge of television and radio broadcast at Zaporizhzhya region Volodymyr Kuchugurnyj. «Two years ago National council approved resolution «About execution of Ukrainian legislation concerning language of television and radio programs», - said Volodymyr Efymovych. Another round table participant – deputy head editor of newspaper “Zaporizh’ka Sich” – explains lack of Ukrainian language in mass-media with the fact that major part of regional enterprises belongs to Russian investors. So this capital has its own policy in its media.

Problem of Ukrainian book was opened by rector’s assistant in charge of public relations and mass-media, M. Sc. (Philology), docent of ZNU chair of journalistic creative work Iryna German.

An urgent aspect – question of language culture was touched upon by deputy dean of ZNU faculty of journalism M. Sc. (Pedagogy), docent, head of the chair of journalistic creative work Viktor Kostiuk. He proposed to view the results of research, the subject of which is literacy of external advertisement at Zaporizhzhya central avenue. Mistakes were astonishing. Besides, ZNU students prepare their own sociologic research «Attitude of ZNU studentship to Ukrainian language in radio broadcasting ». 25% prefer to listen to Ukrainian music, 22,5% - Russian. 22,5% use Ukrainian language in everyday life and 77,5% speak only Russian. Of course the problem of the whole state cannot be solved in one day, but we should work on it daily.
